Wild Selections of the Sweet Cherry
This wild form of sweet cherry is from a collection of timber form and vigorous seedlings collected throughout central and northern Europe. Like Prunus serotina, wild black cherry, this strain is grown for its beautiful dark reddish brown wood as well as its fruit. Black Forest strain produces dark black fruits that can vary in size from 1/2 to 3/4 inch in size.
The hard reddish brown wood is easily worked and is considered the top rated European timbers. The flavor of the fruit is considered much like the wild black cherry of North America but much sweeter with little astringency. The growth of this selection is fast growing 2-4 ft. per year. There are no disease issues with the foliage and less problems with insect damage on the fruit than other cultivated black cherries.
