Perennial with Bright Blue Fruit containing Sweet Tasting Pulp
Blue Bean or Blue sausage fruit produces a sweet tasting pulp with a very mild, delicate taste similar to a mulberry. It is consumed in China where it is called Wu-yueh-kua-teng. You peel it like a bean eating the flesh around the seeds. In the Akebia family, Blue Bean is a small shrub or perennial that grows best in part shade in good moisture retentive soil. Under the right conditions it will grow into a shrub up to 8 ft. tall and wide looking a lot like an elderberry plant. It can be grown as an edge woodland plant in dappled shade or full sun. Seedlings will grow fast after transplanting and create a long lived root system.Very easy to grow in a variety of climates from zone 5 to 10. It is self fertile.
