Selected seedling from a group of seedling crabapples with very clean foliage and dense clusters of fruiting. This crabapple is a good cross for developing small clean mini apples that have very clean skins with no disease issues. The fruit looks like a mini McIntosh apple. The original parent tree was found along a major street in Grand Rapids, Michigan where the rootstock was allowed to grow past the rather stunted cultivar that it grafted on to. This seedling rootstock produced a lot of wonder seedlings for us as far as having apples free of disease and insects.
To germinate the seed treat like other apple or pear seeds. Store seed in moist media with a zip lock bag for 90-120 days. Plant in the spring in a good garden soil lightly covering the seed. Normally most of the seeds will come up in the first spring season. Seeds can also be plucked out as they sprout in the bag and put into pots.

An easy from seed apple and worth cultivating from seed. This tree is next to our russet seedling apples as well as the Hewes apple seedlings. This is one of our better crabapples that are never misshapen despite heavy insect and disease pressure. The fruit makes a delicious jelly too and likely more precocious fruiting crabapples could be developed just from seed. |
